Farmer's 3-Hit Night Powers 'Caps to 4th Straight Win
June 8, 2023 - Midwest League (MWL)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa - Left fielder Justin Farmer had three hits and knocked in two runs Thursday, inspiring the TinCaps to their fourth straight win, 9-4, over the Quad Cities River Bandits (Kansas City Royals affiliate) at Modern Woodmen Park. The 'Caps have won 11 of their last 16 games and have tied their longest winning streak of the season.
TinCaps starting pitcher Ryan Bergert (No. 24 Padres prospect) tossed five solid innings in another strong start, allowing just two earned runs on four hits and recording six strikeouts. He has a 1.67 ERA for the season.
Offensively, Farmer reached base in all five of his trips to the plate, finishing the game 3-for-3 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch. After the TinCaps fell behind 1-0 early, Farmer tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the fourth.
That fourth inning turned out to be the most productive of the night for Fort Wayne. Shortstop Jackson Merrill (No. 1 Padres prospect) gave the 'Caps the lead with his own RBI hit in that same inning, making it 2-1. The lead was extended when a wild pitch on a dropped third strike allowed two more runs to score, giving Fort Wayne a 4-1 advantage.
The River Bandits got one back in the bottom of the fourth, but the TinCaps responded with a pair of two-out runs in the seventh, on second baseman Lucas Dunn's run-scoring single and Farmer's RBI triple -- his first three-bagger of the year.
Fort Wayne added another run in the eighth on third baseman Marcos Castañon's single, and two in the ninth. Quad Cities' final run was scored in the eighth on a single by designated hitter Kale Emshoff.
Next Game: Friday, June 9 @ Quad Cities (7:30 p.m. ET)
TinCaps Probable Starter: LHP Bodi Rascon
River Bandits Probable Starter: RHP Chandler Champlain (No. 25 Royals prospect)
