Fresno Falcons News Release
Fresno, Calif. - The Falcons had a 3-2 lead vanish in the third period as two shots got past goalie Jamie Hodson, in addition to an empty net goal, as Fresno lost to Long Beach 5-3 in front of a season-high crowd of 9,032 at Save Mart Center.
David Brisson began the afternoon's scoring with a goal 4:06 into the first period to give Fresno a 1-0 lead. The Falcons went up 2-0 at 7:20 after Shaun Sutter converted a power play by shooting a rebound past Long Beach's goalie, Chris Madden.
The Ice Dogs bit back at 11:44 when Nathan Martz took a pass from Evan Cheverie and sent a backhand past Hodson for a 2-1 score, which lasted through the first period.
Chris Kenady tied the game at two 2:31 into the second period when he scored his 22nd goal of the season. Sutter broke the tie at 8:07 to put Fresno up 3-2 by converting his second power play goal of the night.
The Falcons' lead lasted for over 25 minutes of playing time until Marco Rosa grabbed a rebound which found the back of the net 12:42 into the third for a 3-3 score. Long Beach took its first lead of the game, 4-3, at 13:29 when Cory Urquhart skated from his own blue line to score an unassisted goal.
With less than a minute left in regulation and down by one goal, Fresno pulled Hodson in favor of an extra attacker. Mike Vellinga skated past several Falcons defenders, though, and shot into the empty net for a 5-3 lead with 38 seconds to play.
The loss snapped a six-game home-winning streak dating to Dec. 17, 2004. Long Beach was the last team to beat the Falcons in Fresno back on Dec.14.
The Falcons begin a four-game road trip tomorrow in Long Beach, then travel to Victoria, British Columbia, for a three-game series with the Salmon Kings. Fresno returns home Tuesday, Feb. 8, to face the West Division leading Bakersfield Condors in a 7 p.m. game.
Tickets are on sale for as low as $8 per seat and may be purchased directly at Save Mart Center's box office and all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 485-TIXS (8497), or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
