San Diego Gulls News Release

DAYTON, Ohio – One night after getting shutout and out-shot 51-12, the San Diego Gulls rebounded with a 2-1 win against the Dayton Bombers Saturday night at the Nutter Center.

The Gulls were thoroughly dominated Friday night against the Peoria Rivermen, falling 3-0. It could've been a lot worse, if it wasn't for their stellar goaltending. San Diego's backstop Eddy Ferhi, who entered in relief during the third period Friday, was sharp again and this time got some offensive support.

With the win, San Diego (22-13-4) moves back into a fourth place West Division tie with the Fresno Falcons, who fell to the Long Beach Ice Dogs earlier in the day. The Bombers (13-24-2) have now lost six of their last eight games and remain last in the North Division.

Dayton opened up an early 1-0 lead 7:54 into the first period on ECHL All-Star Tyler Kolarik's team-leading 13th goal of the season. Kolarik picked up a loose puck at the right point, skated all the way into the faceoff circle and flung a shot that sailed over the shoulder of Ferhi.

The Gulls had a few golden opportunities to tie the game in the opening frame, but were turned aside by Bombers' netminder and reigning ECHL Goaltender of the Week Michael Ayers.

It stayed 1-0 until San Diego netted two straight in the second period, grabbing a 2-1 advantage. Mike Garrow notched the first marker at 6:34, but Max Birbraer and Sean O'Connor did all the work. As O'Connor was barreling into the net, Birbraer cut across the crease and sent a backhander toward the net. Neither the goal judge nor Ayers saw the puck cross the goal line, but referee Nigel Pelletier ruled it was in and gave Garrow credit for the score.

Then at 18:42 of the second, Chris Lynch undisputedly lit the lamp, although this one was another strange play. It started out pretty innocent, as Lynch carried the puck out of his own end and dumped it deep into the Dayton zone. But after taking a crazy hop off the boards, the puck bounced in front of the net and Lynch was right there to stuff it past an out-of-position Ayers.

The Bombers had their fair share of chances to tie the game in the third period, but Ferhi and some stingy Gulls defense made the 2-1 lead stand up. Ferhi, who stopped all six shots in the final stanza, finished the game with 26 saves. Ayers made 25 saves, but suffered the hard-luck loss.

Notes: The Gulls are now 3-3-0 against teams outside of their division. They have seven games remaining this season against interdivision teams... San Diego is now 8-9-2 overall on the road... Mathieu Chouinard, thought to have re-injured his groin during Friday's game in Peoria, actually left the game due to dehydration. Chouinard remains on the active roster and will be available to play Sunday... Evgueni Nourislamov was placed on the 30-day injured list after breaking his thumb during Friday morning's practice... Jonathon Shockey, who missed 16 games with a separated shoulder, was activated Saturday... Cory Pecker was assigned by the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks Saturday... Trevor Koenig (elbow tendonitis), Sean Murphy (broken thumb) and Wes Rypien (sprained knee) all remain on the injured list... Andrew Canzanello remains with Cincinnati...
