Falcons Fall to Albany, 4-2

Springfield, MA – The Springfield Falcons surrendered four goals in the first period of a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Albany River Rats before 4,545 at the Springfield Civic Center on Friday night. Albany right wing Jiri Bicek tallied a goal and an assist while center Adrian Foster collected a pair of assists. Defenseman Jeremiah McCarthy and left wing Mike Stutzel provided the scoring for the Falcons. River Rats netminder Ari Ahonen stopped 25 of 27 shots in registering his second win of the season.

Bicek provided the Rats a 1-0 lead with a shorthanded goal 6:17 into the game. The Albany forward intercepted a pass in the Falcons' end by Springfield blueliner Goran Bezina before flinging a wrist shot between the pads of goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier for his sixth tally of the campaign.

River Rats left wing Ryan Murphy lifted a shot over Pelletier from the edge of the crease four minutes later to make the score 2-0. Eric Johansson followed with a power-play goal at the 16:17 mark of the frame.

With 34 seconds remaining in the opening frame, rookie Aleksander Suglobov wristed a shot into the top corner of the net following a face-off win by Albany center Craig Darby.

The Falcons got on the board when McCarthy scored 7:52 into the second period. Rookie forward Frantisek Lukes set up the goal by circling behind the Albany net with the puck before feeding McCarthy for the one-timer in the slot.

Stutzel concluded scoring with his fourth goal of the season with 3:23 remaining in the game during a scramble in front of the River Rats' net.

Albany outshot the Falcons, 36-27, in the game.

The clubs will next meet in Albany on Friday, December 12th.
