Falcons Fall Short in Portland

The Springfield Falcons lost to the Portland Pirates 4-2 on Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Mane in the second game of their current three-game road trip through New England. The Falcons now have a record of 2-3 as they head into Manchester, New Hampshire for a 3 pm matinee against the Monarchs.

"Tonight was kind of the opposite as last night, last night we had some bounces go our way and tonight they didn't," said Falcons assistant captain Ben Guite. "I thought we were doing some good things, we had some chances, had the advantage in shots, but in the end they took advantage of their opportunities."

The Pirates enter the game a perfect 3-0 on the season and they continued their momentum early in the first period on Saturday. Portland's Luke Adam opened the scoring at 7:22 of the first period giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead, but Springfield's Tom Sestito evened the score at 1-1 when he scored his third goal of the year at 9:55 of the opening period assisted by Cody Goloubef and Chad Kolarik.

Midway through the opening period, Springfield's Kyle Neuber and Portland's Dennis McCauley dropped the gloves and picked up figthing majors.

Portland regained their lead at 12:21 of the first period when Mark Mancari scored his fourth goal of the year giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead through 20 minutes of play.

In the second period, McCauley extended Portland's lead to 3-1 when he scored his second goal of the year at 3:43 of the second period.

"I thought their third goal took some wind out of our sail," said Guite. "But, we hung in there, battled to the end, we kept applying pressure."

Springfield continued to pressure Portland's end in the second period outshooting the Pirates midway through the middle frame. Late in the second period, Springfield's Tom Sestito and Portland's Maxime Legault went toe-to-toe for the game's second altercation.

Eight minutes into the third period, Portland took a three-goal cushion when Mancari scored his second marker of the game, but Springfield's Nick Holden cut the Falcons' deficit to 4-2 late in the final frame.
