Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans answered back from a 1-0 deficit with three straight goals to hang on for a 3-2 win to spoil the Hershey Bears' home-opener tonight at the Giant Center. With the win, Rochester improves to 2-2-0-0 on the young season, snapping a brief two-game skid in the process. Over 10,000 fans were on hand as the two-time defending champs commemorated their 2010 title win with a ring ceremony and banner raising.
Third-year forward Michal Repik (1+1) and veteran defenseman Joe Callahan (0+2) each tabbed two points as Jacob Markstrom turned away 24 saves in his fourth consecutive start between the pipes.
Hershey also received two-point outings from reigning league MVP Keith Aucoin (0+2) and former Lake Erie Monsters captain Brian Willsie (1+1). Dany Sabourin finished the evening with 12 saves in the losing effort.
The Bears staked out to an early 1-0 lead just 5:40 into the opening frame as Willsie converted on the power-play for his second goal of the season. Aucoin and Lawrence Nycholat each picked up assists on the play after Rochester's Mike Duco was sent off for a slashing infraction at the 5:06 mark.
Rochester responded under six minutes later with a man-advantage tally of its own as Repik found the back of the net for his first of the campaign at 11:04. Callahan would notch his first point of the night, and first as an Amerk with an assist, while Kostka collected his fourth helper in his last three games as the Amerks began a three-goal run. Repik also extended his current streak to four games with his goal.
The Amerks would take their first lead of the game at 14:53 with Michael Nylander's second goal in an Amerk uniform and Evgeny Dadonov potted his first of the season at 7:15 of the second stanza to increase Rochester's lead to 3-1 after 40 minutes of play.
Andrew Gordon brought the Bears back within one on another power-play goal at 6:54 of the third period, but Hershey could not complete the comeback despite holding the Amerks to just one shot in the final frame.
The Amerks return home on Sunday, October 17th to play the Adirondack Phantoms at 5:05 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena. The game can be heard live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk. The game will also be shown live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet Channel 26. Fans can purchase the Zweigle's Family Four Pack, which includes four tickets to a game, four hot dogs and four sodas all for one low price of just $52.
