Sharks fizzle in Norfolk

NORFLOK, VA - Three Norfolk Admirals scored two goals and the Sharks allowed 56 shots on goal in a 7-2 loss to the Admirals at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia on Saturday night.

Benn Ferriero (3rd) and James Marcou (2nd) scored for the Sharks and Carter Hutton made 47 saves in relief of Alex Stalock who was pulled after allowing three goals on five shots in the first 5:11 of the first period. The Admirals improved to 3-0-0-0 for the 2nd time in their 11th year history in the AHL in front of 3,330 fans.

The Admirals scored three quick goals in 4:11 to open up the first period on Alex Stalock for a quick 3-0 lead. Paul Szczechura (2nd), Johan Harju (1st), and Chris Durno (1st) gave the Admirals an early 3-0 lead on five shots on goal. Carter Hutton replaced Alex Stalock, and the Sharks responded with two goals to close out the period. James Marcou stole the puck away from two Admirals defenders behind the Norfolk net and found Benn Ferriero (3rd) at the side of the cage at 10:58 to get the Sharks on the board. James Marcou (2nd) struck on the power play as he rushed down the right wing, used a defender as a screen, and sent a 45 foot snap shot past Dustin Tokarski at 13:59 to get Worcester within one goal. The Sharks trailed 3-2 after twenty minutes of play outshooting Norfolk 14-12.

Paul Szczechura (3rd) struck again at 2:39 to give the Admirals a 4-2 advantage. Norfolk would regain their three goal lead as Marc-Antoine Pouliot (1st) jammed a power play goal past Carter Hutton at 3:46. The physical play picked up at the end of the period as Blair Jones hit T.J. Trevelyan with a high check and Chris Durno drilled Nick Schaus on a waved-off icing behind the Sharks net. The Sharks allowed a season high 23 shots against in the second period and trailed 5-2 after 40 minutes of play.

Norfolk scored twice more in the third period as Johan Harju (2nd) and Chris Durno (2nd) each scored their second goals of the contest as the Admirals continued to control the tempo of the game. T.J. Trevelyan received a game misconduct after a spearing major at 4:38 and Sharks captain Jay Leach went toe-to-toe with Mathieu Roy at 11:42. The Sharks were outshot 21-14 in the third period and 56-36 in the game.

The Sharks record falls to 1-2-0-1 (3 pts).
