Norfolk, VA – The Springfield Falcons suffered a 4-2 defeat to the Norfolk Admirals at The Scope on Saturday night. Left wing Nikita Alexeev scored the lone goal for the Falcons early in the third period while goaltender Brian Eklund made 41 saves in the game. Cape Cod native Eric Nickulas registered a goal and an assist for the Admirals.

Norfolk opened scoring in the game with 4:44 remaining in the first period on a shorthanded goal by Nickulas. Nickulas fired a shot from near the left wing face-off dot for his third marker of the season soon after he had exited the penalty box. Center Brandin Cote recorded the lone assist.

The Admirals made the score 3-0 in the second period after right wing Matt Keith and defenseman Duncan Keith scored 2:50 apart. Matt Keith collected a rebound before backhanding a shot past Eklund for his 11th goal of the season at the 12:50 mark. Duncan Keith then scored his fourth of the campaign on a blast from the slot after receiving pass out of the left wing corner from Nickulas.

Alexeev put the Falcons on the board 5:12 into the third period after accepting a pass from defenseman Doug O'Brien and moving in from the right face-off circle to snap a shot past Norfolk netminder Adam Munro. The goal was Alexeev's 10th of the season.

However, the Falcons were not able to pull closer in the game and suffered their second two-goal loss of the weekend in Norfolk.

The Falcons finished the game scoreless in four chances with the man advantage. Norfolk connected once on six power plays in the contest.

Munro made 17 saves for Norfolk to record his fifth win of the season.

With the teams matching up for the second time in as many nights, the game proved to be a contentious affair as it included seven fights. Springfield forwards Steve McLaren and Andre Deveaux each participated in a pair of scrums. Falcons right wing Darren Reid was ejected from the game in the second period along with Norfolk's Cote as the players engaged in a secondary fight after a prior one had been broken up. The Falcons and Admirals combined to accumulate 114 penalty minutes in the game.

The Admirals will visit the Falcons at the Springfield Civic Center on Feb. 23rd and 26th to complete the four-game season series.

The Falcons will face the Worcester IceCats at the DCU Center on Wednesday in a 7:05 p.m. contest. The Falcons next home game is Friday, Feb. 4 versus the Manchester Monarchs.
