Bridgeport, Conn. - The Springfield Falcons came back to down the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 2-1, today at the Webster Bank Arena.
This is the Falcons' first regulation win since Feb. 28, which also came against the Sound Tigers. The victory advances the team to 35-27-8-0 on the season with 78 points. Springfield also completes the eight-game season series with Bridgeport with a 6-1-1-0 record.
Falcons goaltender Scott Munroe made 22 saves, ending a two-game losing streak. Sound Tigers goaltender C.J. Motte allowed two goals on 37 shots. Springfield was able to convert on one-of-six power play opportunities, while the penalty kill unit held Bridgeport scoreless on all three man-advantages.
After a scoreless first period, the Sound Tigers were first on the board with 5:10 remaining in the middle frame. Mike Halmo received a pass from Dustin Jeffrey and fired a wrist shot from the right circle to take a 1-0 lead over the Falcons. Scott Mayfield earned credit for the secondary helper.
At the 7:29 mark of the final period, the Falcons struck on the power play to even the score. T.J. Tynan ripped a shot from the point that was tipped by Sean Collins. Motte blocked the initial shot, but left the rebound out for Ryan Craig to sweep in. Craig is now on a four-game points streak, registering three goals and two assists in that time.
The Falcons took over the lead four minutes later. While Luke Adam and was tangled up in front of the crease, Mike Hoeffel grabbed control of the puck and slid it in five-hole for his eighth of the season. Brian Gibbons picked up the secondary assist to break his 10-game pointless streak.
The Falcons return to the MassMutual Center on Friday, April 3 to host the Albany Devils at 7 p.m. as part of Fan Appreciation Weekend.
