Lake Erie Crushers News Release
NORMAL, Ill. - The Lake Erie Crushers received a big two out, RBI double from Adrian Ortiz in the eighth inning of Wednesday night's contest at the Corn Crib, which turned out to be the game's only run, as the Crushers came away with a 1-0 win over the Normal Cornbelters.
The Crushers (2-3) received an incredible performance from Paul Fagan (1-1), who tossed seven scoreless innings to snag the victory. The Cornbelters (1-3) outhit the Crushers, 5-4, but were blanked for the first time this season.
Lake Erie had a chance to score early on, as the first two batters of the game, Gered Mochizuki and Ortiz reached on a walk and a single respectively. However, Normal starting pitcher, Tyler Lavigne, retired the next three batters to keep the Crushers off the board.
The Cornbelters also posed a threat early on, as their leadoff batter, Alvaro Ramirez, reached on an infield single, and made his way to second on a wild pitch. Ramirez eventually made his way to third, but was stranded after Pat Trettel popped out to end the inning.
Normal didn't get another runner into scoring position again until Brantley Meier started the sixth inning with a double. Meier never made it past second base, as Fagan sat down the next three batters.
Wally Correa began the eighth inning with a base hit through the left side of the infield. Brian Erie's sacrifice bunt pushed Correa into scoring position, and Correa made his way to third on Mochizuki's groundout. Down in the count, 1-2, Ortiz smashed a double down the line in right field to plate the game's only run.
In the bottom of the inning, the Cornbelter's posed their biggest threat of the night. A dropped third strike got Meier to first base with one down, before Ramirez reached on his second infield single of the game. Steven Felix then walked with two outs to load the bases. Kelyn Schellenberg entered the contest for the Crushers, and retired Trettel on a fly out to right field to end the inning.
Fagan earned the victory, and allowed just four hits over seven scoreless frames, while fanning seven batters in the process. Jonathan Kountis (2) worked a perfect ninth inning to grab his second save in as many days. Ryan Krumlauf (0-1) took the loss, allowing a run on two hits in two innings of work.
Seven players reached safely for the Crushers, and Ortiz counted for two of Lake Erie's four knocks on the night. Ortiz went 2-for-4, and has now hit safely in four out of five games this season.
The Crushers will finish their three game series with the Normal Cornbelters at The Corn Crib on Thursday night. Right hander Eric Gonzalez-Diaz (0-1, 3.60) will take the mound for the Crushers, and the Cornbelters will counter with left hander Tyler Stovall (0-1, 12.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
