Last time out.
The Traverse City Beach Bums handed the Slammers their third straight loss in Tuesday night's home opener at Silver Cross Field. After three scoreless innings, the Bums pounced in the fourth with back-to-back RBI singles from Brian Heere and Kyle Colligan at the top of the order for a four-run fourth inning. Joliet's Trey Manz was the team's savior at the plate, driving in runs off singles in the fifth and seventh, and the Slammers put the game within one via a Traverse City wild pitch. The Beach Bums put the game away when Colligan again knocked in two RBI in the eighth, and in the ninth when Sean Gusrang sent a home run sailing over the right field fence, giving the game its 7-3 final score."Captain" Jake Renshaw went three and two-thirds innings in his first start of 2012 and gave up three runs off of only one hit. He took the loss while Reid Kelly got the win for Traverse City.
For Starters.
RHP Tommy Mendoza is coming off a win against the Gateway Grizzlies where he went five innings of one-run baseball. Mendoza made his first start for the Slammers on June 27, 2011 and went on to post a 6-2 record during the regular season. He won both his starts in the playoffs while posting a 1.50 ERA. Mendoza was a 5th round draft pick of the Angels in 2005. He has a career ERA of 3.97 over six seasons in affiliated baseball. The right-handed pitcher rose to the Triple-A level at the age of 21 in 2009. He was 7-7 with a 3.36 ERA for Double-A Arkansas and was named a Texas League All Star before earning the promotion to Salt Lake. With the Bees he went 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA. Mendoza suffered from multiple injuries in 2010 which only allowed him to pitch in 10 games.
Three games under .500.
The Slammers currently sit at three games under the .500 mark. In 2011 the most they were ever under .500 was two games.
Trying to stop the streak.
If the Slammers lose today their losing streak will extend to four games. Joliet lost four in a row only once (8/16-8/19) in 2011.
During the day.
The Slammers finished 7-5 in 2011 in day games. In 2012 they are currently 0-1.
First hit.
Lockport High alum Trevor Willis' single in last night's contest was his first professional hit.
Movin' on up!
RHP Gaby Hernandez became the fourth Slammers player to move on to affiliated baseball when his contract was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. He joins LHP Aaron Dott, Joliet native RHP Ryan Quigley and Darien native RHP Chris Pack as former Slammers in MLB organizations.
High five.
Catcher Ben Hewett is the only Slammers player to hit safely in all five games the team has played. He has one hit in each contest and is hitting .417 on the year with three walks and a RBI.
Mandel-BOMB, Mandel BOMB!
Zach Mandelblatt's two home runs Friday night matched the Slammers' record for most home runs in one game. The last time a Slammers player hit two home runs in one game was September 2, 2011 when Josh Flores and David Fox both did it against Rockford.
Triple-A talent.
The Slammers boast four players who have played at Triple-A level during their careers, one step below the major leagues. DH Erik Lis played for the Rochester Red Wings of the International League in 2010. Utility man Abel Nieves played for the Salt Lake Bees of the Pacific Coast League in 2006, 2009 and 2010. RHP Amalio Diaz pitched for the Salt Lake Bees of the PCL in 2010 and 2011. Meanwhile RHP Tommy Mendoza also pitched for Salt Lake in 2009 and 2010.
