Gateway Grizzlies News Release
WASHINGTON, PA - The Washington Wild Things belted two grand slams and defeated the Gateway Grizzlies 12-7 Wednesday night at Consol Energy Park. The loss was the second in a row for Gateway (2-3) and helped set up Washington (4-1) for a possible sweep Thursday night.
After a two-run Washington first, Shain Stoner hit the first of two Washington grand slams in the second inning off Grizzlies starter Zach Robertson (0-1), who surrendered six earned runs on just three hits in three innings. Robertson walked five batters, including four in the first, which helped two runs score on no hits. He took the loss.
Gateway scored two in the second and two in the third to stay within striking distance, but Washington still led 7-4 after tacking on another run in the third.
The score stayed that way until the sixth inning when Washington scored a run to make it 8-4.
Washington blew the game wide open in the seventh on their second grand slam of the game. After two Grizzlies errors in the outfield and an intentional walk, Joel Carranza drove in four with one swing of the bat. Gateway committed four errors in the game.
The Grizzlies finished up the scoring in the eighth on a Jon Myers three-run home run, his second of the game.
Robertson took the loss for the Grizzlies. Phillip Reamy surrendered just one run in three innings, while Kolby Moore didn't give up an earned run in two innings of work.
Jerod Yakubik led the Grizzlies offensive attack with a 3-for-4 night, including an RBI. Jonathan Johnson and Antone DeJesus both had multi-hit games and Jon Myers homered twice while driving in four runs.
The Grizzlies and Wild Things wrap up the series on Thursday night in Washington, PA. Right-hander Cale Johnson gets the start for Gateway. First pitch is set for 7:05 EST.
