Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA-Two grand slams led the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, to a 12-7 victory over the Gateway Grizzlies.
The Wild Things scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Four straight walks by Gateway's starting pitcher, Zach Robertson, allowed leadoff hitter Shain Stoner to score the first run of the game. Shortstop Matt McConnell scored later to give his team the 2-0 lead.
The Grizzlies responded in the top of the second inning to tie the game. A double by first baseman Jerod Yakubik drove in right fielder John Shelby. Shelby was later brought home on a single by center fielder Antone DeJesus.
But the tie would not last for long. In the bottom of the second inning, with the bases loaded, Stoner hit a grand slam over the left field fence to take a 6-2 lead. Stoner went 2-for-4 on the night, with two runs and five RBIs.
Gateway added two more runs in the top of the third inning to make it 6-4, but a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Joel Carranza drove in left fielder James Simmons to make it a 7-4 ball game. No runs were scored by either team until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Washington struck again. First baseman Michael Bando scored after Stoner hit a single.
The second grand slam of the game occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning when Carranza left the yard on a 0-1 pitch. Carranza was 1-for-2 with two runs and five RBIs. Gateway added three runs in the top of the eighth, but were unable to close the gap.
Washington starting pitcher Ryan Thomas spent two innings on the mound and allowed four runs (all earned) on four hits. He walked three batters and struck out one. Reliever Shawn Smith pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed no runs on three hits.
Gateway starter Robertson lasted three innings and allowed seven runs (all earned) on three hits, with five walks. Reliever Kolby Moore finished the game for the Grizzlies, pitching the final two innings. Moore allowed four runs (none earned) on one hit, while striking out one batter.
The Wild Things close out their series against the Gateway Grizzlies tomorrow night at CONSOL Energy Park. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. Legends Week continues with racing legend Dave Palone coming to the park.
