River City Rascals News Release
O'Fallon, Mo - For the second straight night the Rascals (4-1) rallied against the London Rippers (1-4) with four runs in the eighth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit en-route to a 6-3 win.
Rascal catcher Charlie Lisk touched Ripper starter Yohan Gonzalez for a two-run homer in the first inning to give River City and pitcher Brad Stillings an early cushion. The Rippers would battle back as Gonzalez would settle down, holding the Rascals hitless until a sixth inning double from Lisk.
London plated a run in the third on a single from David Christensen and Joash Brodin continued his hot hitting against his former team, crushing a homerun to center that tied the game at two in the sixth.
Stillings gave way to Justin Gill in the seventh who promptly allowed a single to the leadoff man, but got the next two outs before Brandon Cunniff (1-0) allowed the inherited runner to score on a Brodin single to give the Rippers their first lead at 3-2. Cunniff finished the seventh and pitched a scoreless eighth before the Rascals offense came to life in the bottom of the frame with some help from the Rippers pitching staff.
It took three pitchers to get through the eighth for London, each of them walking at least one batter, four total in the inning, including a bases loaded walk to Jason Patton that tied the game at three. Lisk would follow that walk with a two-run single and Jareck West added an RBI on sacrifice fly to center for the three-run lead.
Second year pro Dustin Umberger pitched around a single with a pair of strikeouts to lock down his first professional save and the fourth win against one loss for the Rascals in their opening home stand of 2012.
The home stand concludes tomorrow as River City goes for the sweep against London. The Rippers will send Sheng-An Kuo (0-1, 1.80) to the mound against River City left-hander Justin Edwards (0-1, 3.86).
NOTES:
-Charlie Lisk finished the night 3-4, HR, 2B, 4 RBI after being moved to the cleanup spot
-Eric Williams hit-streak ended at 11 games but he did draw a walk and score
-former Rascal Joash Brodin is 5-for-8 at the plate with two homeruns and five RBIs
