Express Swept by Fresno in 3-1 Loss

FRESNO, Calif. - With a 3-1 loss to the Fresno Grizzlies (53-60) Friday night at Chukchansi Park, the Round Rock Express (62-52) were swept for the second time this season

The Grizzlies got to Express starter Michael Kirkman early, putting up one run in the first inning. Grizzlies center fielder Gary Brown hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt in the next at-bat. Right fielder Francisco Peguero drvoe home Brown to give Fresno an early 1-0 lead.

The Express were held to just one hit through the first six innings as Fresno starter Mitch Lively worked the first six innings, allowing just two walks while striking out six E-Train batters.

Fresno extended their lead to two runs in the fifth inning. Third baseman Carter Jurica singled in the first at-bat. Two batters later, back-to-back singles drive home Jurica making it 2-0 Grizzlies.

With Fresno reliever Mason Tobin on the mound, the Express finally got on the board in the seventh. Designated hitter Manny Ramirez hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a throwing error. He attempted to score a run on a single by Joey Butler, but was tagged out at home for the second out of the inning. First baseman Chris McGuiness singled home Butler for the E-Train's lone run of the game.

With reliever Nate Robertson on the mound for Round Rock, Fresno added an insurance run. Ehire Adrianza hit a leadoff double, but was unable to advance with the next two batters recording outs. Reliever Cory Burns came in to replace Robertson and record the final out of the inning. Catcher Hector Sanchez, the first batter Burns faced, lined a single to center field to plate Adrianza and give Fresno a 3-1 lead.

The Express went down in order in the top of the ninth to end the game.

Express starter Kirkman, on his first major league rehab assignment with the Express, went 5.0 innings giving up two runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out two in his first Triple-A loss this season. Relievers Justin Miller, Robertson and Burns combined to give up one run on four hits over 3.0 innings. Fresno starter Lively took the win to improve to 5-4 on the season.

The Express heads to Sacramento for a four-game series against the River Cats before returning to Dell Diamond on Thursday, August 8. RHP Josh Lindblom (8-1, 2.21 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Express against the River Cats' RHP Sonny Gray (9-7, 3.3 ERA).
