Iowa Cubs News Release

Tacoma, WA - The Chicago Cubs have selected the contract of SS Donnie Murphy from the Iowa Cubs. Murphy was available, but didn't play, in the Cubs' game this afternoon against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs signed Murphy as a minor league free agent just prior to the start of this season after he spent spring training in camp with the Milwaukee Brewers. In 89 games with Iowa this season, Murphy batted .265 (80-for-302) with 18 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs, 41 RBI, 32 runs scored, and five stolen bases. He hit safely in 16 of his last 18 games with Iowa. His .969 fielding percentage at shortstop ranks better than the listed league leader, Jonathan Villar of Oklahoma City (.965), but he leaves the I-Cubs three games shy of enough games at the position to qualify.

The Cubs a four-game series at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, Washington tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00 Central time. LH Brooks Raley (6-7, 4.70) will start for the Cubs against RH Hector Noesi (2-1, 7.20) for the Rainiers. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 8:40.
