Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

South Bend, IN - Everth Cabrera, an infielder for the San Diego Padres, has joined the Fort Wayne TinCaps on a major league injury rehabilitation assignment. Cabrera will be with Fort Wayne during the team's two-day stay in South Bend.

Cabrera, 26, was placed on San Diego's 15-day disabled list on June 19th with a left hamstring strain. At that time, he was hitting .305 with four home runs and 21 runs batted in. He is currently the National League leader in stolen bases with 31. He led the NL last year with 44 stolen bases.

Cabrera, native of Nandaime, Nicaragua, was originally signed by the Colorado Rockies as a non-drafted free agent on June 11, 2004. He was selected by the San Diego Padres in the first round of the Rule 5 draft on December 11, 2008. His first minor-league experience in the San Diego organization came in 2009, when he debuted with the Advanced-A Lake Elsinore Storm. Cabrera has never played with Fort Wayne.

This marks the second-ever rehab stint by a Padres player in a TinCaps uniform. In August of 2010, David Eckstein, who has since retired, joined the TinCaps for three games in Comstock Park, Michigan, as they took on the West Michigan Whiecaps.

In an additional roster move, RHP Ruben Mejia had been transferred from Double-A San Antonio to Fort Wayne. Mejia pitched two innings of scoreless relief on Sunday for San Antonio. This season with Fort Wayne, he is 2-5 with a 3.16 ERA in 13 appearances.

The TinCaps roster stands at the Midwest League limit of 25 active players.
