Lansing Lugnuts News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - Todd Hankins drove in three runs and starter Robbie Aviles held the Lansing Lugnuts (2-10, 34-47) to one run in five innings to help the Lake County Captains (8-5,31-49) to a 6-2 win on Tuesday night at Classic Park.
The Lugnuts have now lost five straight games.
After the Lugs took a 1-0 lead in the second on a wild pitch, Hankins drilled a game-tying solo homer in the bottom of the second and followed up in the third inning with a go-ahead two-run double to push the Captains in front, 3-1.
Ben White (Loss, 4-5) pitched well for Lansing in keeping the Lugnuts close, but Lake County was able to blow the game open in the seventh against reliever Efrain Nieves.
Anthony Santander drove in two with a single and the next batter, Jorge Martinez, lined a double to add a run, but a play at the plate ended the inning with Lake County up 6-1.
It was more than enough offense for Aviles (Win, 2-3) and the Captains bullpen. The 21-year old Lake County starter allowed just a lone earned run in five innings of work but was removed before the start of the sixth inning with an apparent injury sustained during his warm-up tosses. He allowed just four hits in the outing with three walks and three strikeouts.
White finished with 5.2 quality innings for the Lugs, giving up three runs - just one earned due to three errors behind him - on seven hits. The Coatesville, Pa. native struck out three Lake County hitters and issued a pair of walks.
Both Dwight Smith, Jr. and Seth Conner had two-hit nights at the plate, and Kevin Patterson earned the lone RBI of the night for Lansing with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, scoring Dalton Pompey from third base.
Game two of the four-game home-and-home series is set for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday night at Classic Park. The Lugnuts will give the ball to 18-year old right-hander Roberto Osuna (3-4, 4.20) to oppose Captains' right-hander Jake Sisco (4-6, 3.55).
