Snappers End Kernels Win Streak, 5-4
July 2, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - Renato Nunez doubled, singled, picked up two RBIs and scored a run for the Beloit Snappers as they topped the Cedar Rapids Kernels by a score of 5-4 in Midwest League action at Pohlman Field on Tuesday night with a crowd of 822 in the park.
Beloit's torrid pace continues as they now have 53-29 record (10-2 in the second half) after their fifth straight victory. Cedar Rapids sees its 11-game win streak come to an end and they sit at 51-29 (11-1 in the second half).
In the first inning, the Snappers jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Jose Berrios (5-4) thanks to an RBI double by Nunez (2-4, 2 RBIs, run) and a run-scoring knock off the bat of Matt Olson. Ryan Mathews added another run with a double that plated Sam Roberts in the second.
Cedar Rapids got back in the game with a sacrifice fly by Jorge Polanco (1-3, 2 RBI) in the third. Two innings later, a sacrifice fly by Niko Goodrum and a Polanco RBI single evened the score at 3-3.
Having lost the lead, Beloit was quick to retake it. A pair of singles in the fifth by Brett Vertigan and Daniel Robertson (2-4, 2 runs) put men on first and third with nobody out and a passed ball tallied Vertigan with the go-ahead run. Nunez picked up his second RBI of the night two batters later with a single that pushed the lead to 5-3.
The job of holding that lead fell to Derek DeYoung, who replaced starting pitcher Deyvi Jimenez (1-0) in the sixth. The first batter DeYoung faced was Travis Harrison, who promptly crushed a solo homer, his 14th, to right. After that, the Kernels could get nothing off Derek DeYoung. He allowed just two more hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out three over three frames. In the ninth, Austin House came in for the Snappers and threw a 1-2-3 inning for his fourth save.
The fifth and final game of this homestand is Wednesday at 7:00pm. RHP Dakota Bacus (7-2, 3.46 ERA) is scheduled to start for Beloit against Cedar Rapids RHP Christian Powell (2-1, 3.13 ERA). July 3rd is certain to be one of the most fun-filled nights of the season at Pohlman Field. Not only is it Social Media Wednesday, where fans can pick the day's special offer by visiting the Snappers Facebook Page and Twitter Account, but the team will be wearing special Patriotic Hats to celebrate the upcoming holiday. Fans can bid on the hats in a silent auction during the game. After the game, the team will provide the perfect start to Independence Day with postgame fireworks, sponsored by Bolgrien, Koepke, & Kimes, S.C. and the Huntley Illinois Fan Club. This tremendous display will get anyone in the perfect mood for the Fourth.
