Kane County Cougars News Release
GRAND CHUTE, Wisc. - Tyler Wagner worked into the ninth inning as held the Kane County Cougars down to pace the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 5-3 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Fox Cities Stadium.
Wagner (7-6) worked a career-high 8.1 frames while not allowing any hits between the second and ninth innings. Wagner coughed up three hits in the first as the Cougars (32-46, 2-10) jumped on top. Kevin Encarnacion singled but was thrown out at home on a Dan Vogelbach fielder's choice groundout. Albert Almora also singled but was caught at second as he tried to stretch his knock into a double.
Jeimer Candelario provided a lift for the Cougars though as he blasted a two-run homer on a 3-0 pitch from Wagner to give the Cougars a 2-0 cushion. Tayler Scott (4-3) couldn't hold on to the lead as the Timber Rattlers (33-44, 4-8) struck for a pair in the bottom of the first.
Michael Reed reached on a Marco Hernandez error and scored when Victor Roache grounded out to Hernandez. Tyrone Taylor bunted his way on and advanced to second on a Scott throwing error before crossing the dish on a Mike Garza triple.
Garza singled to start the bottom of the fourth and was brought home with the go-ahead run on a three-bagger off the bat of Orlando Arcia. Scott lasted 6.1 innings but left in the seventh after walking Tyler Roberts and Alfredo Rodriguez. Both men scored on a Reed double off reliever Sheldon McDonald which gave the Rattlers a three-run advantage.
Wagner took the mound for the ninth but walked Vogelbach to start the frame. Candelario reached on a fielder's choice and came home on a Hernandez base hit which finally chased Wagner from the contest. Jono Armold (S, 1) finished it by inducing a double play groundball off the bat of Willson Contreras.
The Cougars and Timber Rattlers close their five-game series on Wednesday night from Fox Cities Stadium with a 7:05 first pitch. Left-hander Michael Heesch (3-6) will start for the Cougars against righty Jorge Lopez (3-6). The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Thursday night for Independence Day against the Quad Cities River Bandits with a 6:30 start.
