Everett Silvertips News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Everett Silvertips overcame a close game early to defeat the Portland Winter Hawks 7-2 in their Western Hockey League game on Saturday night, January 5th, at Memorial Coliseum in Portland. Vitaly Karamnov had a four point night while three other Everett players had multiple points as well. The Silvertips are now 5-1 this season against Portland and have an overall record of 21-19-0-2 (44 pts.). They remain third place in the U.S. Division and tied for fifth in the Western Conference.
Everett opened up scoring in the first period with a pair of goals before Portland responded with one of their own. Kyle Beach put in a rebound at the 2:50 mark following a Mike Alexander point shot and then Zach Hamill stole the puck on a great individual fore-check and scored at 12:29. Jacob Dietrich pulled the Winter Hawks to back within one with a shorthanded goal at 17:44, but Clayton Bauer at 19:50 gave the Silvertips a 3-1 edge during a two man advantage. Bauer's goal was his 12th in 21 games since coming to Everett; he has now scored in seven of the last eight games. Everett out shot Portland by a wide 19-4 margin in the period.
Points on the scoreboard weren't in quite the abundance during the second set of 20-minutes as the teams exchanged just one goal apiece. The home team cut it to a 3-2 Silvertips lead when Radim Valchar converted a Portland power play at 4:55. However, Karamnov opened up some breathing room once again for the visitors at 9:22. A good, clean scramble at the top of the Winter Hawks crease resulted in several shots for the Silvertips before Karamnov finally put the puck behind Portland goaltender Kurtis Mucha. Shots on goal in the second was also a much different story as the Winter Hawks paced the way by out shooting the Silvertips 16-12.
Everett solidified their victory with a trio of special teams goals in the third period. First at 1:34, Karamnov scored his second of the game while on the power play. That was followed up later at 15:30 when Hamill and Jesse Burt found themselves on a shorthanded, 2-on-1 rush. Hamill's cross ice pass found the tape of Burt's stick who fired a shot through Mucha just as he was being knocked to the ice and crashed heavily into the end boards. Finally, Jonathan Harty put the puck in at 19:26 during a power play scramble around the Portland crease.
The team will now head east of the mountains to take on the Tri-City Americans tomorrow evening at Kennewick's Toyota Center for a 5:05 p.m. start time. The Silvertips then have a pair of upcoming home games at Comcast Arena at the Everett Events Center. On Wednesday night, Tri-City will be making their last visit until mid-March for a 7:05 p.m. start time and Seattle comes to town for a 7:35 p.m. puck drop on Friday night.
