Giants sneak past Thunderbirds

Seattle, WA - The Vancouver Giants defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 2-1 Saturday night in front of 4,314 at KeyArena.

This was the second game of a home-and-home series between the two teams. The Giants won the first game 6-1 Friday night in Vancouver.

The T-Birds are now 17-14-5-1 in the US Division with their next game coming Friday, January 11, against the Everett Silvertips in Everett. Vancouver took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by James Wright at 16:37 of the first period. Mario Bliznak and Spencer Machacek had the assists.

Vancouver (28-8-1-4) outshot Seattle 13-8 in the first period.

Evander Kane put the Giants in front 2-0 at 2:41 of the second period with an unassisted goal.

The Giants outshot the T-Birds 17-12 in the second period and led 30-20 in shots after two periods.

David Richard scored a power-play goal at 6:33 of the third period to get the T-Birds on the board. Off a face off in the left circle Greg Scott passed the puck to Benn Olson at the left point. Olson put a slap shot on goal that Vancouver goalie Kraymer Barnstable stopped but the puck rebounded to Richard at the right of the goal. Richard took the rebound on his back hand, moved the puck to his forward and then put the puck into the net past a lunging Barnstable.

Seattle outshot Vancouver 15-8 in the third period but the Giants finished with a 38-35 advantage in the game.

Seattle goalie Jacob DeSerres made 36 saves on 38 shots and his record is now 9-7-0-1.

Barnstable made 34 saves on 35 shots and his record is now 2-2-0-0.
