Young Stars Set To Return

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

London, Ontario -- Three members of the Western Hockey League's Wheat Kings return to Brandon Saturday, fresh off capturing a bronze medal with Team Western at the 2008 World Under 17 Challenge in London, Ontario.

To say that the play of 16-year old WHL rookies Brayden Schenn, Scott Glennie and Brodie Melnychuk were instrumental in Team Western's 9-6 victory over Pacific in Friday's Bronze Medal game would be an understatement.

In Friday's game, Schenn scored once and set up two others while Glennie added a pair of assists in their final game at the tournament, which featured five Canadian regional teams as well as five other countries including the United States that lost 3-0 to Ontario in the Championship Final.

A native of Saskatoon, Schenn was leading all WHL rookies in scoring when he joined Team Western and picked up where he left off in Brandon as he finished the annual event as the tournament's leading scorer with six goals and 13 points in six games. Glennie was third in team scoring and tied for fifth overall with four goals and 10 points. Melnychuk meanwhile picked up two assists in six games.

Among the other players on Team West were Wheat King goaltending prospect Graham Hildebrand and local product Paul Bonar of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Swan Valley Stampeders.

This marked the third medal for Team West since the tournament's inception 22 years ago, but second in four years after capturing the gold medal in 2005. Among the players on that gold medal winning team was current Wheat King defencemen Chad Erb.

Schenn, Glennie and Melnychuk are expected to be in the Brandon lineup Sunday night when the Wheat Kings close out a mini 2-game weekend homestand against the visiting Prince Albert Raiders at Westman Place. The Wheat Kings will be hoping to rebound from Friday's 4-2 loss to Lethbridge - a game that saw Brandon finish the game without seven of their regulars in the lineup.

Game time Sunday night is 6 p.m. and tickets are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca

Brandon will enter Sunday night's game with a record of 25-13-0-1.
