Evansville Native Throws Three-Hit Gem in Three-Run Win

(CRESTWOOD, ILLINOIS) - Evansville native Adam Champion allowed just three hits over 8.0 innings as the Otters defeated the Windy City Thunderbolts 3-0 on Friday night at Standard Bank Stadium.

b0 Evansville took the early lead with a third inning rally. Outfielder Runey Davis hit a one out triple and the next two batters reached on a walk and a fielder's choice. After a pair of outs, DeAngelo Mack worked a full count and hit a two-run single to right field.

The Otters added to their 2-0 lead in the 5th with a bases loaded walk from Luis Uribe and a fielder's choice from designated hitter Dan Killian.

Windy City trailed against Evansville starter Adam Champion for most of the game. The lefty took a one-hitter in to the seventh inning where Thunderbolts catcher Zach Aakhus recorded an RBI single to break up the shutout.

Leading 4-1, Champion would continue to throw in to the eighth inning where he recorded a season-high nine strikeouts.

Closer Eric Massingham retired Windy City in the ninth, maintaining the 4-1 lead for the series-opening win.

Evansville improves to 36-40 as the first place Windy City Thunderbolts drop to 44-31.

Champion (6-5) is the winning pitcher as Thunderbolts starter Dustin Williams (10-5) takes the loss. Massingham secured his 20th save of the season in the win and his 42nd as an Otter, passing Matt Petty for third most in Frontier League history.

The Otters will now go for their second straight win on Saturday night. Right-hander Wynn Pelzer (1-2, 4.13 ERA) will be on the mound for Evansville against fellow righty Blayne Weller (4-2, 4.40). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. CDT at Standard Bank Stadium.
