
Harden Goes Eight Strong in Win

Marion, IL - Southern Illinois Miners starter pitched eight strong innings to earn his eighth win of the season, as the Miners defeated the Gateway Grizzlies 6-3 at Rent One Park. Harden gave up five hits and two runs. He walked one batter and recorded seven strike outs in the victory. Paul Tremlin of Gateway went the distance as he pitched eight innings and gave up six runs (five earned) in his third loss of the season.
The Miners jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as newly acquired Javier Herrera hit a solo home run with two outs off Tremlin. Herrera came right back in the bottom of the third inning by hitting a base hit and RBI with one out to give the Miners a 2-0 lead. Carlos Mendez hit a sacrifice fly off Tremlin to give the Miners a 3-0 lead then Chris Anderson brought in a run off an error by Grizzlies short stop Richie Jimenez Jr to give the Miners a 4-0 lead.
The Miners came with the bats again off Tremlin in the bottom of the sixth inning when Cory Harrilchak hit a double with the bases loaded off Tremlin to give the Miners a 6-0 lead. Tremlin would then retire the sides in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to keep it at 6-2 in favor of the Miners.
Brandon Cunniff came in to close out the game in the ninth inning but gave up two hits and a run on a RBI single by John Shelby to put Gateway within three runs. Cunniff struck out Justin Dunning to end the game and give the Miners a 6-3 win.
The Miners improve to 45-31 on the season and trail Traverse City by four games within the Eastern Division. The Miners and Grizzlies will meet again as Brian Fowler will be on the mound game two for the Miners. He'll be opposed by Alex Kaminsky who is in search for his ninth win. First pitch at Rent One Park will be 7:05 pm.
