Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Jacob Clem pitched seven innings of one-run ball and Jeff Flagg had two hits and two RBI as the Traverse City Beach Bums won their fifth game in a row, upending the Schaumburg Boomers 6-1.
With Schaumburg leading 1-0 in the fourth, Traverse City loaded the bases on walks to Flagg and Marcus Nidiffer, sandwiched around a single by Kyle Colligan. Kyle Eveland stood in and worked a full count walk to force in Flagg and tie the game at 1-1.
The Beach Bums went ahead to stay in the fifth as Brian Heere led off with a single followed by a double off the wall in centerfield by Jose Vargas to put TC up 2-1. After Chase Burch was hit by a pitch, Flagg dropped a double into right to score Vargas and make it a 3-1 game.
Traverse City would score a run in the seventh on their second bases loaded walk of the contest, this time delivered by Nidiffer plating Burch, who had walked earlier in the inning. The Beach Bums would tack on two in the eighth on an single by Burch and a groundout by Flagg.
Meanwhile on the mound, Clem (6-4) did his part and then some. The right-hander went seven innings in the game, the eighth time in 15 starts that he has gone seven innings or longer. He allowed five hits and one run, the only blemish on his record a second inning homer by Steve McQuail. Clem also induced 15 ground ball outs, the ninth time this season he has gotten at least 14 groundouts in a game. Cameron Roth (8-6) suffered the loss for Schaumburg.
Offensively, in addition to Flagg's two hits, Heere and Colligan recorded multi-hit contests while Burch drove in a run for the fourth time in five contests.
Game two of the series comes up on Saturday against Schaumburg at 7:05 p.m. The Beach Bums will have a special postgame fireworks show as the high winds in Traverse City forced the cancellation of Friday night's fireworks display. It will be Sons and Daughters Night at Wuerfel Park presented by Century Link. Fans can bring their sons or daughters on the field for a pregame catch from 6:15 to 6:30. Bring your gloves only and the Beach Bums will provide the baseballs. Kids tickets are half price with the purchase of an adult chairback seat. For tickets call 943-0100, log on to tcbeachbums.com or visit the Wuerfel Park ticket office. Scott Dunn (4-3, 3.38) will get the start for Traverse City against Alex Rivers (2-2, 5.18) for the Boomers.
