Last time out.
Joliet swept the Road Warriors with a 6-0 win last night. A 90-minute rain delay in the middle of the third inning slowed things down but Joliet broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth. David Christensen bombed a solo home run to straightaway center field, handing the Slammers at 1-0 lead. A handful of walks loaded the bases, and Patrick Norris drew a walk for the insurance run. In the next at-bat, Brad Netzel continued his hot streak, clearing the bases on a three-run double, and he came around soon after on an RBI single by Abel Nieves. The game remained scoreless after the forth, securing the series sweep of the Warriors. Steven Maxwell threw until the rain delay in three innings of scoreless ball, and was relieved by Mike Barsotti who earned the win in three scoreless of his own. Geoff Brown, Chase Doremus, and Daniel Carela each tossed a frame to complete the effort.
For Starters.
Jacob Sanchez is coming off an outstanding outing against Schaumburg on August 4. He went six shutout innings, scattering five hits, walking two and striking out five in a 5-0 win for Joliet. He has gone at least five innings in every start so far for the Slammers and has the lowest ERA (1.91) in the starting rotation. Sanchez was the Midwest Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2012. Sanchez finished the 2012 Iowa Wesleyan season with a 10-2 record and a 2.42 earned run average, including 111 strikeouts, 12 walks, 71 hits allowed and 28 runs allowed (25 earned) in 93 innings pitched. He led the MCC in strikeouts and innings pitched, was second in wins and third in earned run average and opponents' batting average (.208). Sanchez obliterated the Iowa Wesleyan single season strikeout record, becoming the first player in school history to go over 100 K's in a season, and also tied the school record for wins in a season. He also was a recipient of a Gold Glove award with one error in 29 chances in the field.
