
Miners Acquire Javier Herrera

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners announced today they have acquired outfielder Javier Herrara of the Rockford RiverHawks for three players to be named later. Herrera is currently in his eighth season of professional baseball and a former product of the Oakland Athletics organization where he played as high as AAA back in 2005. In 2006, Herrera was the #2 prospect in the entire Oakland Athletics organization.
"This is a big pickup for us as we make our push to the playoffs", Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "Javier is one of the league's best hitters and he will be part of a very strong offensive effort with the other good players we have here."
"He does a lot of things well on the field", Pinto added. "He provides excellence defense, a strong throwing arm and plays the game hard. We are very excited to have him."
Herrera, a 2012 All-Star with Rockford, is currently third in the Frontier League in hitting. His .338 average is currently behind league leader Joash Brodin (.370) who is no longer in the league and Abel Nieves of Joliet who is batting .350 on the season. His .338 average helped Rockford lead the league in overall batting average (.272) up to this point in the season.
With the RiverHawks, not only did Herrera bat .338 but also hit eight home runs and drove in 64 RBI's, which is third in the league behind Jose Vargas of Traverse City (78) and Chad Cregar of Windy City (76). In 74 games Herrera has recorded 94 hits, which is second in the league behind Frank Pfister of Schaumburg (103). He is also fourth in the league with 145 total bases and has 21 doubles on the season, which is also fourth in the league. He hit three triples, walked 30 times and stole seven bases with the RiverHawks.
In 2010 with the Yuma Scorpions of the Golden Baseball League, Herrera batted .368 in 14 games. He hit two home runs and registered 14 RBI's with the Scorpions. He recorded 21 hits and scored 17 runs in 57 at bat's. The year before with the Midland RockHounds (AA) of the Texas League, Herrera only played in one game.
In 2008, Herrera played in 61 games for the RockHounds. He hit .267 with nine home runs and had 36 RBI's with 13 doubles and two triples. He scored 44 runs and stole eight bases.
The year before with the RockHounds in 2o games, he batted .254 with three home runs and 13 RBI's. He recorded 18 hits and score 13 runs with one stolen base. Prior to being promoted, he played with the Stockton Ports (A+) of the California League. He batted .274 with nine home runs and 39 RBI's. He recorded 69 hits and 45 runs. He hit 17 doubles and stole 11 bases. In 2006, Herrera was ranked the #74 prospect in country by Baseball America.
In 2005, Herrera was ranked the #68 prospect in all of baseball by Baseball America and began the season in Kane County (A) of the MidWest League. In 94 games, He batted .275 with 13 home runs and 62 RBI's. He recorded 18 doubles and two triples with 99 hits and 70 runs scored. Due to his high level of play, he was promoted to Sacramento (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League. In five games with the River Cats, Herrera hit .417 with one home run and three RBI's. He hit one double, scored one run and stole one base.
In 2004, Herrera played with the Vancouver Canadians (A-) of the Northwest League. In 65 games, Herrera batted .331 with 12 home runs and 47 RBI's. He stole 23 bases and was only caught once. He hit 15 doubles and four triples with 87 hits and 50 runs scored.
In 2003, Herrera began his professional career with the Arizona League Athletics (Rk). In 17 games, Herrera batted .230 with two home runs and 13 RBI's. He stole three bases, hit three doubles and one triple. He recorded 14 hits and scored 12 runs and walked seven times.
