Evansville Otters News Release
(O'Fallon, Missouri) - The Evansville Otters rallied late to pull within a run but reliever Derrick Miramontes maintained the lead for a 9-8 River City Rascals win on Wednesday afternoon.
The game started earlier than normal on Splash Day at the Ballpark with an 11:05 a.m. first pitch.
The Otters started the scoring with a three run third inning capped off by a Jamar Walton RBI single that scored Greg Alexander.
Ahead 3-0, Otters lefty Mike Anton looked to maintain the lead but allowed a two run homer to shortstop Bobby Burk in the bottom of the inning.
River City then scored five runs in the fourth and another pair in the fifth inning as Evansville then trailed 9-3.
Down but not out, the Otters mounted a comeback over the next few innings. Third baseman P.J. Sequeira singled home a run in the sixth inning and Walton struck again with a two-run home run in the seventh that pulled Evansville within three runs.
Behind 9-6, the Otters scored another two runs in the eighth inning and loaded up the bases with one out. With River City leading by a run, closer Derrick Miramontes induced a pop-up from Jon Waltenbury that the Rascals infield caught and turned into a double play. Miramontes stayed in for a scoreless ninth inning as River City completed the sweep in a 9-8 victory.
The Rascals improve to 15-8 on the season with the win as the Otters are now 5-18.
Left fielder Greg Alexander went 5 for 5 for Evansville with two runs and two runs batted in. Fellow outfielder Jamar Walton also went 2 for 4 in the contest with a home run and three RBIs.
The winning pitcher is Dustin Umberger (1-2) who allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched. The loss goes to Otters' starting pitcher Mike Anton (0-3) after yielding nine runs in 4 1/3 innings. Miramontes also earned his fourth save of the season after tossing two scoreless innings in relief.
The Evansville Otters will now travel to Normal, Illinois as the club begins a three game series tomorrow night against the Normal CornBelters. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday as Jeremy Thorne (0-4, 6.90 earned run average) starts for Evansville and Jon Berger (2-1, 7.54 ERA) will be on the bump for Normal.
