River City Rascals News Release
O'Fallon, Mo. - River City held a 9-3 lead after five innings Wednesday afternoon in front of 2,379 mostly soaked children on Super Splash Day at T.R. Hughes Ballpark, but Evansville scored five unanswered runs to close the gap to 9-8 before the Rascals closed out the game in the ninth with Derrick Miramontes picking up the two-inning save.
River City (16-8) trailed 3-0 after the Otters (5-19) strung together four hits off starter Dustin Umberger (1-2) who picked up his first professional win with 5 1/3 innings of work allowing four runs while pitching around 10 hits with five strikeouts.
The Rascals responded in the bottom of the third with two runs on a Bobby Burk homerun and followed up with five runs in the fourth as Jareck West drove in two with a double and Burk added his second big fly, a three-run shot to left to stretch the lead to 7-3.
River City added two runs in the fifth on a Joash Brodin double to take the six-run lead into the sixth inning when the Otters began their comeback.
One run scored in the sixth to chase Umberger and the usually reliable bullpen took over, but would falter as rookie Kolby Moore, making his professional debut, allowed a two-run homerun to Jamar Walton in the seventh before little used Martin Dewald took over to start the eighth.
Dewald would allow consecutive hits to start the frame and Miramontes would be summoned to take over. After a walk and a single scored one run, Miramontes would load the bases with an intentional pass before getting a double play lineout to escape the inning with a one-run lead. He would pitch a perfect ninth for his fourth save in as many chances, sending the Rascals to their fifth-straight win.
River City begins a six-game road trip tomorrow against Southern Illinois with first-pitch set for 7:05 tomorrow night. You can catch all the action on Westplex News-Talk 94.1 or online at westplexnewstalk.com.
