Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies stranded the game tying run on third base for the second day in a row and fell to the Normal Cornbelters by the score of 9-8 on Wednesday afternoon at GCS Ballpark. The Cornbelters swept the Grizzlies, who have lost five in a row, in front of a crowd of 2,744.
Rookie Mike Mobbs provided the game-winner for the Cornbelters on a solo homer to left off of Grizzlies reliever Chris Enourato in the ninth. That broke an 8-8 tie and the Cornbelters were able to hold on, despite a threat from the Grizzlies in their half of the ninth.
The Grizzlies struck first with three runs in the first inning. TS Reed started off the inning with his first professional hit, Ryan Khoury and Charlie Lisk followed with walks and Joe Agreste drove in Reed on a single to get the Grizzlies on the board. Brandon Peters followed with a two-run double, his second in as many days.
The Cornbelters got on the board with a run in the third on an Alvaro Ramirez RBI single.
The Grizzlies took a 4-1 lead in the bottom half as Khoury and Logan Parker hit back-to-back doubles to score a run.
Normal roared back with four runs in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. That chased Grizzlies starting pitcher Josh Davis from the game. Davis went just 3 1/3, giving up four runs on five hits.
After the Grizzlies tied it at five in the bottom half, Normal combined for three runs in the next two innings to take an 8-5 lead.
Peters answered again, tying the game with one swing of the bat on a three-run homer in the eighth inning. Peters finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs.
The Grizzlies begin a three-game series with the Florence Freedom on Thursday. Grizzlies ace Mark Brackman will get the start in game one of the series. First pitch is set for 7:05.
Grizzlies notes: The Grizzlies have some exciting discounts and promotions for their upcoming series with the Florence Freedom. Thursday is Bark in the Park presented by Olsen Veterinary Clinic. Friday features the 50,000 penny drop and Sand Bucket Giveaway presented by GCS Federal Credit Union (Kids 12 years of age and under). In Saturday's home stand finale, it's the Big Screen TV Dig presented by American TV and play catch with dad on the field.
