Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners are proud to announce that the contract of right-handed pitcher Cory Cowsert has been sold to the New York Yankees. He is expected to report to the Yankees Gulf Coast League affiliate in Tampa in the next day. Cowsert is 3-0 with a 0.55 ERA in 11 relief appearances with the Miners this season.

"I was really in shock," Cowsert said when he heard the news. "Words can't describe it. It's one of those things you want your whole life. Getting the opportunity, it's just phenomenal. Words just can't explain it."

Cowsert becomes the 17th Miner to sign with a Major League organization in the team's five year history. The 23-year-old righty signed with the Miners as a rookie out of Central Methodist University last August.

"I could not be happier for Cory," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "His hard work and dedication is paying off in the realization of his dream. Although we will miss him in our bullpen, he will always be part of our Miners family. Our entire coaching staff wishes him great things ahead in his future."

This comes one day after the news that the Joliet Slammers had sold the contract of former Miners right-handed pitcher Ryan Quigley to the Washington Nationals organization. He is of no relation to the current left-handed Ryan Quigley in the Miners bullpen.
