Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - The Hot Rods fell to the Dayton Dragons 4-1 Thursday night, losing for the second time in as many games. Shortstop Robi Estrada extended his career-high eight game hitting streak and Jason McEachern threw a season-high seven innings, but it was not enough as the Hot Rods lose just their second series of the second half.

Facing Jason McEachern for the second time in 2010, the Dragons opened the first inning in similar fashion to their start against McEachern. Back on May 1, the Dragons delivered a pair of two-out, two-run homers. On Thursday, Henry Rodriguez smacked a two-run homer followed two batters later by Mark Fleury, who went deep for the second time of the series for an early 3-0 lead.

Three innings later, Fleury came to the plate again and stroked another homer to put the Dragons on top 4-0. The homer was Fleury's third of the series, his fifth against the Hot Rods in 2010, and his third against McEachern as he had one of the two home runs on May 1.

The Hot Rods, meanwhile, were hitting some baseballs hard but didn't have anything to show for it over the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth they were finally able to scratch out a run thanks to a Gabe Cohen bunt single and a Mark Thomas double, leaving runners at second and third. A wild pitch by Justin Walker then forced home Cohen to cut the deficit to 4-1.

That's all the Hot Rods could muster against Walker over six innings. The lefty allowed just five hits without issuing a walk. He ended with three strikeouts before turning things over to the Dayton bullpen for the final three innings.

Considering the tough start, McEachern settled down and turned in his longest outing in a Hot Rods uniform. The young righty would throw seven innings, only giving up four hits. He did give up four runs, all on home runs, but McEachern was dominant excluding those at bats. The Dragons only came to the plate three times with runners in scoring position in his seven innings.

Pitching was the running theme in the late innings, and it was tough going for the Hot Rods against the Dragon bullpen as well. In relief of the starter Walker, newcomer Jamie Walczak and Pedro Villareal went the rest of the way. The two combined to throw three hitless innings, retiring the Hot Rods in nine straight at bats through the seventh, eighth, and ninth.

The series and home stand come to an end on Friday night with post-game fireworks presented by Landshark Shredding and WBKO. First pitch is at 7:05 PM. Gates open at 5:30 PM for Season Tickets holders and 6 PM for the general public.

RHP Kirby Yates (1-2, 2.25) starts the game for the Hot Rods against Dayton RHP Ricky Bowen (2-2, 4.59). You can follow the game on the radio with Tom Gauthier and Hank Fuerst beginning at 6:50 PM on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
