Dayton Dragons News Release
Bowling Green, Kentucky - Mark Fleury belted two solo home runs and Henry Rodriguez added a two-run shot as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Bowling Green Hot Rods 4-1 on Thursday night. The win was the Dragons fifth straight, matching their longest winning streak of 2010.
Fleury went 3 for 4 with the two homers and a double to continue his hot hitting. He is batting .483 over his last eight games.
The Dragons came out of the gate quickly. Rodriguez drilled a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to get the Dragons started, and one batter later, Fleury hit a solo homer to make it 3-0. Rodriguez's long ball was his ninth of the season while Fleury connected on number seven.
In the fourth inning, Fleury hit his eighth of the year, a long blast to right field that gave Dayton a 4-0 lead.
Bowling Green closed the gap to three in the bottom of the fourth when a run scored on a wild pitch, but they were shut down the rest of the night.
Dragons starting pitcher Justin Walker (3-8) worked six innings, allowing five hits and one run with no walks and three strikeouts to earn the win. Jamie Walczak worked a perfect seventh inning and Pedro Villarreal retired all six batters he faced to close it out for his second save. Bowling Green did not have a hit after the fourth inning.
The Dragons finished with just five hits, but matched a season-high with three home runs. Rodriguez had a double to go along with his home run.
The Dragons (6-8) close out the road trip at Bowling Green on Friday at 8:05 p.m, looking for their second straight three-game sweep. Ricky Bowen (2-2, 4.59) will start for Dayton against Bowling Green's Kirby Yates (1-2, 2.25). The next home game is Saturday, July 10 against Great Lakes in the first game of a three-game series. Sunday's game will start at 4:00 p.m. before the series concludes Monday at 7:00 p.m.
Notes: Five of Fleury's eight home runs this season have come against Bowling Green including three over the last two nights...The Dragons bullpen, which had struggled mightily in the second half, has tossed 10 scoreless innings over the last three days...The five straight road wins are the most this season for the Dragons.
