Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (July 8, 2010) - Once Wednesday night's suspended game resumed on Thursday, it took the Bees only about a half hour to pick up a win. The regularly-scheduled contest, though a different animal entirely, yielded the same result, and the Bees walked away with two wins over the first half Western Division champion Cedar Rapids Kernels by identical scores of 5-4.
In the suspended contest, the action resumed with the game tied at four in the top of the eighth. Neither team scored in the eighth, and Ryan Dennick (W, 3-3) induced a double play from Jon Karcich with two men on and one out to send the game to the bottom of the ninth still tied. Fernando Cruz singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second before being replaced by pinch runner Deivy Batista. With two outs, Gerard Hall dribbled a ball through the middle that kicked up off the edge of the outfield grass, slowing it down just enough to allow Batista to score ahead of Mike Trout's missile of a throw from center.
The Kernels entered the scheduled game undaunted, however, as Richard Cates slashed a two-run double to right to take a 2-0 first inning lead. The lead was extended further, to 4-1, in the top of the third on run-scoring hits from Cates and Midwest League RBI leader Casey Haerther.
The Bees scored runs in three consecutive innings, however, to pull within one after the fourth. The bullpen held the Kernels offense in check until the Bees were able to break through against reliever Young-Il Jung (L, 0-1). Hall and J.D. Alfaro led off the seventh with consecutive singles and were aided around the bases by a pair of Jung wild pitches. Reigning Midwest League Player of the Week Rene Oriental provided the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to center that put the Bees on top 5-4.
Mitch Hodge, Sam Runion (W, 2-1), and Rodolfo Encarnacion (S, 3), combined for five innings of scoreless relief to lock down the win and move the Bees into a tie with Quad Cities and Clinton for first place in the second half standings. Cedar Rapids, meanwhile, remains in first place in the overall standings at 50-32.
The Bees close out the brief three-game homestand on Big Fun Friday presented by Budweiser at Community Field, where it is also Royals Night! The Bees will don the uniforms of their parent club, and you can enjoy specials on Budweiser products from the time the gates open at 5:30.
