West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Each team committed three errors, which was a season-high for the Whitecaps, but after falling behind 3-0 West Michigan prevailed 4-3 over Clinton.
Andrew Kown pitched three shutout innings of middle relief to earn the victory. Anthony Claggett and Orlando Perdomo each chipped in a scoreless inning to seal the win. Perdomo earned his seventh save in seven opportunities.
Clinton used back-to-back two out doubles in the first inning from Johnny Whittleman and John Mayberry to move on top, 1-0.
In the third, Matt Smith came home on a wild pitch and David Peterson scored on a ground out by Stanwood native Billy Killian as Clinton pushed the lead to 3-0.
Whitecaps starting pitcher Burke Badenhop survived a tenuous fourth inning in which four different Lumberkings reached base, but no one scored.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Whitecaps rallied against Clinton lefty Michael Kirkman.
Dusty drove a two out double to the base of the wall in left-center to start the rally. Pedro Cotto put the Whitecaps on the board with an RBI single. Rafael Mendez scored on an errant pick-off throw and Cotto came home to tie the game on a double by Jeramy Laster.
With the game still tied at 3-3 in the sixth, Ryan was at first when Cotto singled to right. Ryan moved from first to third and Mayberry threw to third from right field. Whittleman caught the throw then tried to nab Cotto, who had taken a big turn at first. Whittleman's toss went out of play, which allowed Ryan to score with the go-ahead run.
Broc Coffman pitched four innings of relief for Clinton and allowed no earned runs, but took the loss.
The Whitecaps are 9-6 and three games above .500 for the first time this season.
Andrew Kown has pitched 11 innings this season over four relief appearances and has not allowed a run.
