South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend - Part of winning or even snapping a losing streak is having things go one's way and capitalizing on things that go one's way. Saturday night at the Cove, the Silver Hawks had things go their way, capitalizing on three Wisconsin Timber Rattlers miscues, defeating the Wisconsin 9-7.
The Timber Rattlers scored the first two runs of the game, crossing the plate once in the first and second inning. In the third, the Hawks equaled their season high for runs in an inning when they tapped the plate seven times.
After Steve Mena reached on a fielding error by Rattlers third baseman Ron Garth, Manuel Ferrer walked putting runners at first and second. Pedro Ciriaco's sacrifice bunt moved players ahead ninety feet and they continued running on the play when a throwing error by Garth plated Mena and Ferrer and placed Ciriaco at second knotting the game at two. Greg Thomson followed and was hit by a pitch by Wisconsin starter Jason Snyder. Justin Upton followed with his first hit as a professional, a double down the left field line to score Ciriaco and move Thomson to third making it a 3-2 lead. Trey Hendricks was retired on a pop out, but Frank Curreri reached on a fielder's choice and Upton advanced to third with Thomson scoring to increase the Hawks lead to 4-2. Orlando Mercado followed by belting his first home run of the year giving South Bend a 7-2 lead after three innings.
Wisconsin pulled within a run in the visitor's half of the seventh, but the Hawks countered with a run in the bottom of the inning. The Rattlers kept it close in the eighth making it an 8-7 game, but the Hawks tallied an insurance marker in the home half of the inning for the 9-7 win.
Eduardo Baeza (2-1) gets the win and Jason Snyder (1-1) suffers the loss. Jonathan Valverde picked up his fourth save of the year.
The Silver Hawks and Timber Rattlers continue their four game set Sunday afternoon at the Cove, with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 P.M and gates opening at 12:30 PM.
