Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities lost big Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium, allowing nine runs on 14 hits - both season highs - in losing to the Fort Wayne Wizards, 9-0.

The Swing (8-8) were shutout for the second time this season, recording only four hits and putting men in scoring position only twice. For the eighth consecutive game, Quad Cities allowed their opposition to score first.

It started in the bottom of the third, when starter Mark McCormick walked the first batter of the inning. Seth Johnston's double with one out started the barrage, and one batter later Calvin Hayes' first error of the inning allowed another run to come home. After another walk, Will Venable - the son of Fort Wayne hitting coach Max Venable - hammered an two-run double to the right-center field wall. He would eventually come around to score on Chad Steiner's single, giving the Wizards a 5-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, they finished the job. Venable started the rally with a single off Jeremy Zick, and after back-to-back walks Fort Wayne had the bases loaded with nobody out. Steiner, Josh Alley, and Johnston each would add RBI doubles, and the Wizards put a four-spot on the board to jump out to a 9-0 advantage.

McCormick (1-1) took the loss for the Swing, lasting only 3.1 innings. The hard-throwing righthander was touched for five runs - three earned - on five hits and four walks while striking out two. After retiring the last two batters of the fourth, Zick allowed four runs on four hits, two walks, and a wild pitch in the fifth. Kyle Sadlowski and Scott Vander Weg twirled the last three innings for Quad Cities without allowing a run.

Twenty-year-old Ben Krosschell (1-2) earned his first win of the season for Fort Wayne, turning in five sparkling innings of shutout baseball. The righthander from Colorado gave up three hits and a walk while fanning six. Retiring nine in a row at one point, Krosschell struck out six of seven batters during one stretch and five in a row between the second and third inning.

UP NEXT: The Swing will continue their series in Fort Wayne on Sunday afternoon, with RHP Cory Meacham (1-2, 6.92) taking the mound opposite RHP Stevie Delabar (0-0, 2.08). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00, and pre-game coverage on WKBF AM-1270 will begin at 12:45.

NEXT HOMESTAND: The Swing will return to John O'Donnell Stadium on Tuesday to begin a 13-day homestand that will be the longest of the season. Quad Cities will welcome in Beloit, Lansing, and South Bend for four games each, and will be home through May 7.
