Close Call, But No Victory for LumberKings

April 22, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Comstock Park, MI - An apparent home run by Clinton LumberKings outfielder John Mayberry was called foul by the home plate umpire, and the L-Kings couldn't hold a 3-0 lead as they fell 4-3 to the West Michigan Whitecaps Saturday afternoon. The loss was their third straight, and their fifth in the last six games.

The LumberKings (5-11) plated a pair of runs in the third inning and were looking for more with runners on second and third and Mayberry at the plate. Mayberry crushed a pitch by Whitecaps starter Burke Badenhop to deep left field that looked to be inside the foul pole, but the home plate umpire saw otherwise. Badenhop then got Mayberry to strike out swinging and worked out of the jam.

The three runs in three innings was all the LumberKings could muster, and the Whitecaps tied the ballgame on starter Michael Kirkman in the fourth. With two outs and no-one on, West Michigan catcher Dusty Ryan belted a double to right center. After a walk to Rafael Mendez, Pedro Cotto plated Ryan with an RBI single. With Jeramy Laster at the plate, Kirkman committed a throwing error on a botched pick-off attempt, allowing Mendez to score. Kirkman then surrendered an RBI single to Laster for the tying run.

Still tied in the sixth, LumberKings' starter-turned-reliever Broc Coffman (2-1) worked into his third inning of relief. With two outs and Ryan on first base, Coffman gave up a single to Pedro Cotto, but a throwing error by L-Kings third baseman John Whittleman would prove costly. Whittleman, who cut off the throw from the outfield to make a play on Cotto at first base, threw the ball offline allowing Ryan to score easily for the eventual winning run. Though the run was unearned to Coffman, it would designate him as the loser.

The Whitecaps (9-6) brought on a trio of relievers to shut down the LumberKings over the last five innings. Andrew Kown (2-0) pitched three innings of one-hit ball to pick up the victory. Anthony Clagget pitched a scoreless eighth, and Orlando Perdomo again set the L-Kings down in order to pick up his seventh save of the year.

Kirkman pitched four solid innings in his start, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. He walked three and struck out four. Both he and Whitecaps starter Burke Badenhop received no-decisions for their four-inning outings.

Mayberry led the LumberKings offensively, going 2-for-4 at the plate and driving in a run with a double in the first. Four other L-Kings recorded a hit apiece.

Game three of this four-game series with West Michigan starts tomorrow at 1:00pm central time. Listen to the broadcast in Clinton on AM 1340 KROS, or stream the broadcast live over the internet.
