Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays ended their 3-game losing streak by winning 4-3 over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 12 innings on a wild pitch.

Cedar Rapids struck first with a run by Brett Martinez in the top of the second by way of a Dallas Morris single to center field. The Devil Rays match the score in the bottom of the fourth inning when Garrett Groce reached base on a double to center field. Rhyne Hughes then drove him home with a base hit to center.

Southwest Michigan put up another score in the sixth frame when J.T. Hall was driven home with a sacrifice fly ball from Hughes. Cedar Rapids took the lead with two runs in the eighth inning only to have them negated by a Neil Walton run for the Rays in the bottom of the same inning.

In the bottom of the 12th inning Brandon Rousseve led off for the D-Rays with a base hit. Rousseve advanced to second on a sac bunt by John Matulia. J.T. Hall then recorded his third hit of the night and advance Rousseve to third. With Garrett Groce at bat, Kernel pitcher Robert Romero threw a wild pitch allowing Rousseve to cross home plate with the winning run.

Devil Rays starter Mike Wlodarczyk had a stellar performance pitching six innings, giving up only four hits and one earned run. Chris Kelly ended up with the win after he came in to start the 11th inning. In two innings pitched, Kelly only allowed one hit.

The Devil Rays have had two games reach 12 innings this season and have won them both. They are now 3-0 in extra inning games on the season.

Southwest Michigan and Cedar Rapids pick it up again tomorrow at 3:35. It's McCullough Family Chiropractic Family Sunday where kids get to run the bases after the game. Twinkie the Kid and Captain Cupcake will also appear courtesy of Hostess.
