Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - Thanks to Robinson Chirinos' tenth inning walk-off double, the Peoria Chiefs made it two straight wins Saturday night against the Burlington Bees with a 2-1 victory.. Starting pitcher Donnie Veal was very solid through six innings and newcomer Kyle Reynolds was 4-4 in his Chiefs' debut.
Reynolds led off the tenth inning with a bloop single then reached second on a throwing error by centerfielder Jose Duarte. After Matt Ciaramella was intentionally passed, Jake Muyco bunted into a fielder's choice setting the stage for Chirinos. With a 3-2 count, the Chiefs' second baseman connected on a Yovany Damico fastball and smacked it into the right-centerfield gap to score Ciaramella from second.
Chiefs' newcomers Kevin Collins and Reynolds made their presence felt right away as the Chiefs got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Collins pulled a solid single to right in his first Chiefs' at-bat. After a Ryan Norwood single, Reynolds singled off of the first base bag to load the bases for Alberto Garcia who hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field. The Chiefs had a chance for more but Duarte made a nice running catch then doubled off Reynolds at second base to end the inning with the score 1-0.
The Bees tied it up in their half of the fourth. Valentino Arce doubled to lead off the inning then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Just two pitches later, he came in to score on Christopher McConnell's RBI groundout.
Donnie Veal was very sharp through six. He gave up one run on just one hit, walking one and striking out nine in the no-decision. Matt Avery came on to relieve him in the seventh and threw two scoreless frames striking out three in those two innings. Jeff Teasley picked up his first win as he came on for the ninth and stranded the go-ahead runner at second in the tenth when he struck out Duarte to end the threat. For the Bees, Matthew Kniginyzky was just as good through eight innings. In those eight innings, he gave up one run on seven hits, walking none while striking out seven. Yovany Damico was shelled with the loss.
