Kane County Cougars News Release

Dayton, OH - The Kane County Cougars' winning streak ended at five games, as they lost 7-2 Saturday night against the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field. Jose Pineda hit a home run, and Justin Sellers and Steve Kleen had two hits apiece, but it wasn't enough.

Pineda's homer was a rocket to left field in the second inning off Travis Wood that put Kane County ahead 1-0, but Cougars starter Trey Shields ran into problems in the bottom half. An error, a walk and two-run double reversed the lead into a 2-1 deficit.

Sellers roped a two-out, two-run single in the fifth to even the score 2-2, but Dayton jumped ahead again versus Shields in the bottom of the inning. The pitcher allowed two hits, hit a batter and gave up a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2 Dragons. Shields left after five innings and gave up three runs -- one earned -- on just three hits. He walked two and fanned one.

Reliever John Herrera allowed his first earned runs of the year, giving up three on three hits in his two relief frames, and Ron Madej surrendered an unearned tally in the eighth on his own error to complete the scoring for the 7-2 final.

Shields (2-2) took the loss, Wood (2-0) got the win and Bo Lanier recorded his first save for Dayton after four scoreless relief frames. The Cougars (11-5), still in sole possession of first place in the Western Division, take on Dayton (6-10) in game three of the series on Sunday afternoon at 1 CDT. Vince Mazzaro (2-0, 6.00) will duel with Carlos Fisher (1-1, 5.28).
