Error proves costly in Kernels 2-1 loss
July 29, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
A throwing error in the top of the eighth inning allowed what proved to be the winning run score as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 2-1, in front of 3,737 fans on YMCA, Vinton, and Principal Financial Family Fun Fest nights at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The loss drops the Kernels to 15-20 in the second half (45-60 overall), while Dayton improves to 15-20.
Cedar Rapids out hit Dayton 9-3 as Alexi Casilla extended his hitting streak to 15 games, going 2-3 with two stolen bases. The stolen bases give him 33 for the season, and the Kernels 142 in 203 attempts. Josh LeBlanc continued to swing a hot bat, going 3-4 and driving in the Kernels' only run of the night.
Both starting pitchers had good outings but neither figured in the final decision. Kernels pitcher Francisco Cordova, starting in place of Joe Torres, pitched 6-1/3 innings of two hit baseball, holding Dayton to a run while striking out five. Dayton's starter Omar Segovia scattered five hits over five shutout innings of work, striking out one and walking one. Homer Bailey (4-4) picked up the win and Blake Hendley earned his 14th save. Miguel Gonzalez was the tough-luck loser as his record falls to 1-4.
Dayton took the lead in the top of the first on a solo home run by B.J. Szymanski. Josh LeBlanc made a valiant attempt at the fence and it looked for a moment as though he'd made a spectacular catch, but the ball managed to get out over the 403-foot sign in right center.
The Kernels tied it up in the sixth as with Alexi Casilla on third base, Josh LeBlanc beat out an infield single as the ball bounced high into the air and made Dragon third baseman Bradley Key's throw too late to get the speedy LeBlanc. Casilla scored easily from third on the play.
The game remained deadlocked at 1 when Cody Strait singled to lead off the Dayton eighth. After stealing second base, he attempted to steal third. Michael Collins' throw got by Freddy Sandoval and into left field, letting Strait score what would turn out to be the game-winning run.
The Kernels and Dragons play game two of this four game series Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Lots of fun is in store, headlined by fireworks after the game sponsored by U.S. Cellular. The Kernels also welcome guests from Manchester to the game and you have a chance to win Labor Day concert tickets from KHAK's Bob James as it's also KHAK night at the ballpark. The gates open at 6 pm and first pitch is scheduled for 7.
