Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Kane County Cougars pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the 13th inning as they defeated the Swing of the Quad Cities, 7-6, at Elfstrom Stadium on Friday night. In a back-and-forth game featuring six lead changes and three different tie scores, Kane County score the last run in a game that took a season-high four hours and 37 minutes to play for Quad Cities.

With the game tied headed to extra frames, Mike Ferris quickly worked ahead in the count, 2-0, against Rob Semerano. He then tattooed a high flyball to right-center, a moonshot that carried to the picnic patio for a 6-5 Swing lead. The homer snapped a personal 1-for-26 slump for Ferris, the slugging first baseman who leads the Swing with 13 home runs on the season.

But the Cougars (17-18, 48-56) evened the score with two outs in the bottom of the frame. First-round pick Cliff Pennington drew a one-out walk, then stole second. With two away, Javiar Herrera belted a ground-rule double off the warning track in right, scoring Pennington. The hit was the first allowed by the Swing bullpen on the night. Michael Gross had worked a scoreless frame, and Mike Sillman had sent down six in a row before the one-out walk and the two-out double against Torres.

Kane County then pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning. Pinch hitter Tommy Everidge drilled a triple off the top of the wall in left center, putting the decisive run at third with nobody. With the infield drawn in, Bo Dickerson coaxed a groundball to third base. But Chris Patrick took his eye off the ball, and it crept under his glove to bring home Everidge for the winning run.

Because the Burlington Bees were defeated 7-0 at Wisconsin on Friday, the Swing (21-14, 57-47) remain in first place at the midway point of the first half.

The Swing tallied first, as Nick Stavinoha lead off the second with a single. Eric Verbryke followed with a one-out base hits to center, and Stavinoha aggressively moved to third, allowing Verbryke to take second on the back end of the play. The aggressive running proved crucial, as Juan Lucena knocked home Stavinoha on a bounceout that would have been a tailor-made double play ball.

The Cougars came back to take the lead in the bottom of the third inning. David Castillo and Gregorio Petit drew walks to open the frame, and moved up to second and third when Mike Ferris made a diving stop on a groundout. Luis Perez blooped a single down the right field line to score both runners for a 2-1 Cougars lead.

The Cougars used a leadoff walk to score another run in the bottom of the third, but the Swing struck back with three runs to take back the lead in the top of the fourth frame. The Swing sent nine men to the plate in the inning, as Spencer Wyman drew a leadoff walk and Matt Lemanczyk singled to left to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, tying Jake Mullinax for the longest streak by a Swing player this season.

With the tying run on base, Matt Shepherd dropped a sacrifice bunt to the left side of the mound. Pitcher Ryan Webb fielded it cleanly, but threw wild to first to score Wyman, and the Swing trailed 3-2. Rick Ankiel followed with a fantastic at-bat, fouling off three straight two-strike pitches before dropping a single into shallow center to score Lemanczyk to even the score. With two outs, Shepherd sprinted home on a wild pitch to cap the rally and give the Swing a 4-3 lead. Quad Cities was able to load up the bases later on in the inning, but reliever Dan Fyvie struck out Mike Ferris to end the threat.

The Cougars took the lead right back, scoring two runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Javier Herrera coaxed a four-pitch walk from Tyler Adamczyk, and then Eddie Kim ripped a 2-2 pitch for a curling line drive down the right field line, keeping it just fair and just clearing the eight-foot-high wall for a two-run homer and a 5-4 Cougars lead.

The Swing struck back against Fyvie in the top of the seventh. Stavinoha drilled a flyball over the head of rightfielder Perez for a one-out triple, and then Patrick knocked him home with a flyball to center.

UP NEXT: The Swing and Cougars continue the series on Saturday night, as the Swing send Phillip Andersen (2-1, 3.17) to the mound against Michael Rogers (5-5, 4.70). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00, and pregame coverage on Progressive Talk AM 1270 will begin at 5:45.
