Chiefs Fall to FTW 9-4

Ft. Wayne, IN - The Peoria Chiefs allowed four unearned runs early and never caught up, falling to the Fort Wayne Wizards 9-4 Friday night. The loss ends a season high four game win streak for the Chiefs who fall to 15-20 on the half and 50-55 overall.

Fort Wayne took the lead in the 2nd inning thanks to three unearned runs. With two outs, Josh Alley and Matt Bush each singled and Yordany Ramirez hit a grounder to third that was booted by Chiefs infielder Anthony Granato. The error allowed Alley to score the game's first run and Bush came home on a basehit by Chris Kolkhorst. Brett Dowdy capped off the inning with a RBI single to scored Ramirez for a 3-0 Wizards lead.

The Chiefs got one run back against starter Jon Ellis in the 3rd and another in the 4th. Eric Patterson drove home Bo Flowers with a single in the 3rd but was left at second base. In the 4th, Jesse Schmidt hit a solo homer, his first of the season, to pull the Chiefs within 3-2.

The Wizards came right back in the bottom of the 4th against Chiefs starter Jesse Estrada. Alley drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a double before scoring on a groundout from Kolkhorst.

The Chiefs again narrowed the gap in the 6th inning when Granato singled, advanced to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on a sac fly. But the Wizards scored another unearned run in the bottom of the inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Granato misplayed a grounder allowing Sean Kazmar to score for a 5-3 Wizards lead.

Fort Wayne put the game away in the 7th against Chiefs reliever Tim Layden. Colt Morton led off with a double and after a strikeout, Kazmar reached on an error by Granato. Alley singled to load the bases and Layden uncorked a wild pitch allowing Morton to score. Matt Bush doubled home a pair for a 8-3 Wizards lead.

Estrada took a tough loss despite allowing just one earned run. The right-hander allowed seven hits over 5 2/3 innings and gave up five runs total, four unearned. The loss drops his record to 5-9 on the season. Pepsi Player of the Game Jesse Schmidt (OF) -Schmidt homered in the 4th inning, his first homer of season for the Chiefs. The outfielder is slugging over .400 and has a .420 on-base percentage in 21 games for the Chiefs in July. Notes... Cubs right hander Kerry Wood will rehab with the Chiefs in Fort Wayne on Sunday and again in Peoria on Tuesday...Ryan Harvey's 9th inning RBI single extended his hit streak to six games and moved his RBI total to 75...The Chiefs are now 1-9 at Fort Wayne since the 2002 Championship season...Sam Fuld left the game in the 2nd inning after re-aggravating a strained oblique muscle...The two teams play game two of the series Saturday night at 6:15...The Chiefs will have RH Sean Gallagher (10-4) on the mound against RH Fabien Jimenez (4-10)...Listen to the game live on 1350 WOAM and at www.peoriachiefs.com.
