Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, announced today that first baseman Eddie Kim and 2004 Cougars reliever Dan Fyvie have been activated on the team's roster. Due to a strained right knee, catcher Roberto Arias has been placed on the DL accompanied by pitcher Marcus McBeth with a right pinky finger contusion. The moves come just before gates open at Elfstrom Stadium for this evening's contest, as the Swing of the Quad Cities come to town for a four-game weekend stint starting with a 6:30 game time tonight at Elfstrom Stadium.
Returning from the disabled list, Kim appeared in 53 games for the Cougars before straining his right oblique, which left him inactive for the past two weeks. Hitting .269 for Kane County with 39 RBI and nine home runs thus far in the 2005 season, the James Madison University attendee found himself to be a part of the A's organization after being selected in the 4th round of the 2003 draft. Following seasons in Vancouver (.305, 39 RBI, 4 HR) and Kane County (.254, 71 RBI, 10 HR), Kim arrived back in Geneva on May 6 of this season after a knee injury kept him in extended spring training to start the season.
Making an encore appearance in Kane County, right-handed pitcher Dan Fyvie started 2005 on the disabled list in extended spring training as he recovered from a torn ACL. The Flint, Michigan native produced a 4-1 mark for the Cougars in 2004 while collecting five saves and 72 strikeouts in 78.0 innings of work. The A's signed Fyvie as a non-drafted free agent out of his home-town Mott Community College in May 2002. Fyvie began his professional baseball career that season with the Arizona A's (Rookie) before heading to the Vancouver Canadians (Short-A, Northwest) in 2003.
Catcher Roberto Arias has manned the plate for the Cougars in eight games this season since joining the team on June 30. Coming from Stockton (High-A, California), Arias appeared in just three games for the Ports, producing a .273 average in eleven at-bats. Signed as a non-drafted free agent in February 2002, Arias made his professional debut with the Dominican Summer League. Spending two-thirds of 2003 in the DSL, Arias was sent to the Arizona League (Rookie) where he closed out the season playing in 12 games. Arias worked a full season in the Arizona League in 2004.
Formerly an outfielder for the Cougars in 2003, McBeth returned to the squad as a pitcher this past May. McBeth appeared in 99 games last season with High-A Modesto (California League), batting at a .234 clip with five home runs and 41 RBI. The Spartanburg, South Carolina native spent part of the 2003 season in Kane County and a stint with High-A Modesto. He helped the Cougars with a .256 average, four long balls and 26 RBI. Oakland selected him in the 4th round of the June, 2001 draft. After not playing in 2001, the 24-year-old spent 2002 between High-A Visalia and the Arizona League A's (Rookie).
