Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - For the second straight night, the Clinton LumberKings battled back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Peoria Chiefs 5-4 in 10 innings. With the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 10th, K.C. Herren led off with a double off the right-center field wall. John Whittleman added a single to put runners at the corners. After an intentional walk to Matt Smith loaded the bases, Jose Vallejo's chopper back to Chiefs reliever Matt Avery (L, 2-2) was fielded cleanly, but Avery's throw to the plate sailed to the backstop. Herren scored from third to end the game and give the LumberKings their third consecutive victory.
The LumberKings trailed 3-0 after six innings, but rallied in the late innings once again. John Mayberry started the scoring in the seventh, ending Peoria starter Donnie Veal's shutout with an RBI single to left field. Freddie Thon walked to put a pair of runners on base, and Terry Blunt knocked them both home with a double to center field. The hit chased Veal from the ballgame as Avery came on. Herren promptly delivered an RBI base hit to right, scoring Blunt and giving the L-Kings a 4-3 lead.
The lead wouldn't last long, as the Chiefs would tie it in the eighth off reliever Kevin Altman. Pinch runner Jonathan Mota reached second base on a passed ball by L-Kings catcher Alberto Martinez, then came home on a soft liner off the bat of Peoria's Alberto Garcia that got over the drawn-in infield. The unearned run gave Altman his third blown save of the year.
Julian Cordero (W, 2-3) earned the win, pitching a perfect top half of the 10th. LumberKings starter Kyle Rogers allowed three unearned runs on three hits, striking out nine while walking three in getting the no-decision.
Veal had a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings for Peoria, but allowed all four runs in the seventh. He pitched 6 2/3 innings, surrendering four hits before exiting.
Herren and Whittleman each recorded two-hit nights to lead the LumberKings. Thon's ninth inning double extended his hitting streak to seven games.
With the win, the LumberKings (18-29) have a season-long 3-game winning streak. The series between the L-Kings and Chiefs continues tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 6:00 pm. Listen to the game on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton, or live on the web at www.lumberkings.com.
