Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars used a three-run fifth inning on offense and six strong innings on the mound from their starter Vince Mazzaro to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-2 Friday night in front of 5,681 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars' nine-game winning streak is one shy of tying the franchise record that was set in the team's inaugural 1991 campaign. The Cougars also increased their lead atop the Western Division to 2 1/2 games over Peoria.

Frank Martinez connected for a sacrifice fly in the first off Rattlers starter Jose Escalona to score Mike Massaro to make it 1-0. The Rattlers only tallies of the night came from a two-run home run in the fourth by Curtis Ledbetter, but Jose Pineda's two-out, run-scoring hit in the bottom half tied the contest, 2-2.

The Cougars put together four consecutive two-out singles in the fifth to pull ahead. Martinez, Jeff Baisley and Steve Kleen each drove in a run for the 5-2 advantage that pushed Escalona from the game.

Meanwhile the Ledbetter homer from the previous inning turned out to be Wisconsin's final hit of the evening. Mazzaro (5-4) lasted six frames to win his second straight start, giving up the two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out three. Brad Kilby worked two perfect innings, and Steve Sharpe posted a 1-2-3 ninth for his 10th save. The pitching trio sent down the final 15 Rattlers it faced.

The Cougars (29-18) and Rattlers (18-29) meet again Saturday night at 6 CDT. Jeff Gray (2-4, 6.50) is scheduled to face Jason Snyder (2-4, 4.79).
