Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, IN - What started as a hitter's game, turned into a pitcher's duel as the South Bend Silver Hawks (21-25) beat the Dayton Dragons (25-23) by the final score of 2-1 at Coveleski Stadium. The two teams combined for three runs on seven hits in the first two innings, and then were scoreless on five hits over the final seven innings.
Dayton would strike first against South Bend starter Ryan Schreppel (WP, 2-5). Mike Griffin led off the game with an infield single to short. As Jay Bruce struck out, Mike Griffin stole second to give the Dragons a runner in scoring position. Silver Hawks catcher Frank Curreri argued that Bruce interfered with his throw to second, but to no avail. After the three minute argument, B.J. Szymanski hit the first pitch he saw off the wall in left, scoring Griffin, and giving the Dragons an early 1-0 lead.
South Bend answered in the bottom of the second inning off Dayton starter Philippe Valiquette (LP, 1-4). With one out, Ricardo Sosa and Curreri hit back-to-back doubles down the left field line to even the game at one apiece. A wild pitch got Curreri to third, and he scored on an RBI single from Steve Mena. Valiquette settled down to get out of the inning, but South Bend had the 2-1 lead after two innings.
From that point, it was all in the pitching. The combination of Schreppel and Donald Julio (S, 2) shut the Dragons out over the final eight innings of the game, allowing just two hits. Julio retired the final 10 Dragons in a row to earn the save.
Dayton pitching was just as good over the final seven innings. Valiquette, Jeff Stevens (ND), and Damian Ursin (ND) combined to shut out South Bend for the last seven frames, allowing just three hits.
The Dragons continue the four game series at Coveleski Stadium with the Silver Hawks on Saturday night with a 6:30 PM first pitch. RHP Travis Wood (4-0, 3.74 ERA) gets the start for the Dragons, while South Bend will counter with RHP Eddie Baeza (3-2, 2.91 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons pre game show at 6:00 PM.
