Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - With Rock Shoulders receiving an intentional walk in the bottom of the eighth inning, a wild pitch on ball four brought home the go-ahead run, and the Kane County Cougars pulled off a 7-6 victory over the Clinton LumberKings on Saturday night in front of 11,139 fans at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Gioskar Amaya began the bottom of the eighth inning with a double and advanced to third on a sac bunt off the bat of Oliver Zapata. Jeimer Candelario fouled out, leaving Amaya at third with two away for Shoulders. Clinton (60-63, 27-27) elected to pass Shoulders intentionally, but Mark Bordonaro (2-4) hurled ball four over catcher Marcus Littlewood's head to bring home Amaya, giving the Cougars (50-69, 20-33) a one-run lead.
Carlos Escobar gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead initially with a double in the bottom of the first to bring home Candelario and Shoulders with two away. In the second, Reggie Golden walked and was drawn to the dish on a base hit by Zapata to make it a 3-0 contest.
Michael Heesch started for the Cougars and coughed the lead up with the LumberKings grabbing a tally in the third and two in the fifth. D.J. Peterson's two-run single in the fifth inning made it a 3-3 ballgame while Clinton took the lead for the first time with a three-spot in the seventh against Andrew McKirahan. Jordy Lara tripled home a pair and scored on a Gaby Guerrero base hit.
Michael Hamann (2-2) replaced McKirahan and kept the LumberKings off the board. In the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars came right back with three to tie the game at 6-6. Shoulders doubled home Zapata and scored on a Marco Hernandez single. Hernandez crossed the plate with the tying run on a single from Golden.
The Cougars and LumberKings will play the second of their four-game series on Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 first pitch from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Right-hander Tayler Scott (5-7) will start for the Cougars against fellow righty Victor Sanchez (5-5). For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
